　　故事发生在苏格兰，讲述普普通通的Gabe（伊恩·德·卡斯泰克 饰），是格拉斯哥「斯特拉斯克莱德救护车服务」的紧急呼叫处理员。当Gabe接到一位似乎认识他的虚弱女子打来的求救电话后，他的世界被彻底颠覆了。Gabe在顶着压力确定她是谁的同时，作出了一个可能具毁灭性后果的决定。

　　一晃眼多年过去，爱莲娜（玛格丽塔·马祖可 Margherita Mazzucco 饰）和莉拉（盖娅·吉拉切 Gaia Girace 饰）都长大成人。莉拉嫁给了斯特凡诺（乔万尼·阿穆拉 Giovanni Amura 饰）开始了并不幸福的婚后生活，而爱莲娜则进入大学，前往比萨继续深造。 在海边度假时，两个女孩同她们的童年玩伴尼诺（弗朗西斯·塞尔皮科 Francesco Serpico 饰）重逢了，爱莲娜依然无法抗拒尼诺所散发出来的魅力，而尼诺似乎对莉拉更加的感兴趣。果不其然，尼诺和莉拉走到了一起。爱尼诺至深的莉拉决定离开斯特凡诺，和尼诺私奔，但眼前的这个男人，真的要比斯特凡诺更加优秀吗？当莉拉的腹中怀上了孩子后，尼诺选择了离开她，无家可归的莉拉不得不再次向斯特凡诺低头。

　　亨瑞（艾恩·格拉法德 Ioan Gruffudd 饰）是纽约城里最著名的法医，业内同行对于他的名声可谓是无人不知无人不晓。虽然人人都知道亨瑞在学术上的卓越成果，但并没有人知道，实际上，亨瑞已经活了200年之久了，一场意外永远的夺走了他获得死亡的权利，漫长的岁月也让亨瑞感到无比的疲惫，只求解脱。
